TFK: Good Hands

“Where are we going?” Taeng is huffing and puffing from the run.

“Swear you won’t tell anyone.”

Taeng isn’t sure he wants to swear if it might be something bad. Remembering the promise he made to Advisor Kim, he pulls his wrist from Steph’s hold. “I can’t get into trouble. I promised Ad—Grandpa.”

Steph rolls her eyes at him. “Unbelievable. You’re not only cheesy, you’re boring goody sparkly white shoesy too?” She pushes his arm. “You’re in high school, dude. This is supposed to be the most hip and happenin’ time of your life.”

“Er . . . but—”

“No buts. Are you in game or are you out cold.”

Taeng’s heart races as he considers his options. If he says no, he risks losing the first friend he made in a real high school. If he says yes and gets caught . . . well, he’ll just have to make sure he doesn’t get caught, right?

“I’m in.”

“You in game?”

“Y-Yeah, I’m in game.”

“That’s the spirit, dude.” Steph gives him another slap on his arm. “Now, swear.”

Steph rolls her eyes at him again. “Repeat after me. I solemnly swear . . .”

“I solemnly swear . . .”

“That I am up to no good.”

“That I am up to no good.” Taeng starts. “Hey, that’s—that’s from Harry Potter.”

“Yeah, I know. I’m Hermione and you’re Harry. But if you tell anyone about this, I’ll skin you alive and throw you into the phoenix fire in the headmaster’s office.”

“I promise I won’t tell a soul.”

Steph bites her lip. “How can I trust you when you’re breaking the promise you made to your Grandpa right now?”

In a fit of giggles, Steph leans to his ear and whispers, “Just kidding.”

“Oh my . . . it’s so cute.”

“It’s a he.”

Taeng looks at the white puppy surrounded by pink blankets. “It’s a boy?”

Taeng squats and puts his hand out for the puppy to sniff. “What’s his name?”

“Prince Fluffy.”

Try as he might to remain impassive, Taeng’s face still contorts. “P-Prince Fluffy,” he repeats with much difficulty.

“Don’t you dare laugh at his name.”

“I-I’m not laughing.”

“Prince is so cute, isn’t he?”

Taeng nods and pets the puppy. “He’s adorable.”

Steph flashes a gleaming eye at him. “So you like dogs?”

“I do.”

“Good. Take him.”

“W-What?” Taeng stutters as the puppy is put in his arms.

“I can’t keep him in this garden shed forever. He needs a home.”

“But isn’t he yours?”

“I can always go to your home to visit him.”

Oh no! “Uh, uh . . . I can’t!”

“Why not.”

“My, er, my grandpa! He, er, he’s allergic to dogs.”

“Oh.” Steph pouts. “It’s too bad then.” Stroking Prince Fluffy’s head, she coos. “I’m sorry little guy, guess you gotta stay here after all.”

“Why can’t you bring him home?”

“My apartment building prohibits dogs,” Steph says with a pout. “But I’m moving to another place soon so I just need to keep Prince here a little longer.”

“Oh . . .” Taeng pouts. “I’m sorry I can’t help you.”

“It’s okay. Just come here often and take care of him for me.”

“I will,” Taeng says seriously.

“Mom, Dad, I’m home.”

“How was first day of school?”

Seo puts his bag down and turns to give his mother a hug. “It was good. We have a transfer student. His name is Kim Taehyuk.”

“Kim Taehyuk?” Seo’s mother says with a frown. “Where have I heard that name before . . .”

Seo smiles. “It’s quite a common name, Mom.”

“Mmm, I guess you’re right.”

“I’ll go up to my room and do my homework now.”

“Come down in thirty minutes. Dinner will be ready by then.”

Seo smiles. “Okay, Mom.”

“So where do you live?” Steph asks as they leave the school compound.

“Er . . . I live in Korea.”

“Duh!” Steph rolls her eyes again. “Where in Korea?”

“Er . . . I live about . . . forty-five minutes away from here.”

“You take the same bus as I do, right? But which stop do you board at?”

“The stop near the hangar,” Taeng replies before he can stop himself.

“Near the hangar?” Steph’s eyes widen. “Oh . . . but why do you board the bus from that stop?”

“Er . . . because I hitch a ride with my grandpa to save time.”

Steph smiles. “You seem to be very close to your grandpa.”

Taeng’s face lights up. “Yes, I’m very close to my grandpa.”

“What about your parents?”

Taeng’s face falls. “They . . . they’re far away . . .”

“I’m sorry.”

Surprise is all over Taeng when Steph gives him a tight hug.

“I kinda know what it’s like.” Then she smiles again. “Don’t worry, bud. I’ll take care of you. You’re in good—”

“Hands,” Taeng finishes with a smile. “I believe you.”

Taeng waves goodbye to Steph with a wide smile on his face and waits for the bus to disappear before hurrying to the hangar where his helicopter awaits. He can’t wait to tell Advisor Kim all about his new friend, Steph.

  1. I can’t believe you put stephanie “hip and happenin” at there HAHAHA
Will this steph hate biology too?? Lmaaoo 😂😂

  2. I can’t wait for steph to become the Queen and make little Prince and princesses with taeng

  3. Are you sure they’re in high school? They’re (Taeyeon) too innocent LOL
And oh that ‘hip and happenin’ LOLOLOL it’s so lame but well, we’re all young and silly at one point of time so I won’t judge high school Tiffany

    1. Taeng has been home schooled so he remains quite pure. Advisor Kim did hint at that in his conversation with the principal ㅋㅋㅋ

This is where you get to say something :D
